UP Marine Science Institute

The University of the Philippines runs its main field station for marine research on the western side of the peninsula, the Bolinao Marine Laboratory. Their best-known project is the giant clam ocean nursery on Silaki Island, a decades-long conservation effort that has restocked tens of thousands of clams across Philippine reefs.

The lab also runs scuba and small-craft facilities used by visiting researchers. Drop-in visits are limited to certain hours, so call ahead if you want a tour. A worthwhile stop if you have an interest in marine biology, or want to see the work behind the reefs you are swimming in.
